So there's this burro. Name's Barry. And Barry's got a problem — nothing to do.
He'd already checked out a few cacti… stared down a roadrunner until things got weird between them… It was barely noon and the Sonoran Desert was doing what it does best. Cooking everything alive.
Barry wasn't having it.
He moseyed over a little hill and squinted into the distance. Now Barry had seen a mirage before… but mirages don't usually have neon signs. There it was. A real building. Low and wide with an Old West-style sign out front that said:
OUT WEST GLOW GOLF
One ear went up. The other wasn't so sure.
He trotted over and pressed his nose against the glass door. A blast of air conditioning hit him right in the face. His whole body said yes.
The door swung open — the attendant at the front had seen some things in her time… a burro on a Wednesday was fine — and Barry walked right in.
Gone was the sun. Gone was the heat. The whole place was glowing in purples and blues and greens. Neon cacti on the walls. A canyon mural that made you feel like the stars were actually moving. Eighteen holes winding through the whole thing.
They set him up with a putter — longer than standard, no questions asked — and a glowing orange ball. Barry studied his scorecard. He held it upside down for a bit. That's fine.
He played the whole course. Quiet. Focused. Ears pinned back on every shot. Not pretty… but effective. Somewhere around hole seven a little kid offered him a cookie. Barry accepted it. Went right back to business.
By the last hole he had a crowd. When that final putt dropped he let out a bray that rattled the neon cacti on the walls. People clapped. Barry blinked like this was expected.
He shot a 42. The attendant raised her eyebrows. Barry did not explain himself.
He walked back out into the desert. Same sun. Same sand. Same roadrunner probably still out there somewhere holding a grudge.
But Barry had a 42 on the books now.
And he'd be back Thursday.
